Choosing the Right Type of Indicator

Size, Color, and Visibility
Indicator size should match the amount of weight it must support. A small indicator creates less disturbance and may be preferable in shallow or clear water, but it can struggle to float a heavy nymph rig. A larger indicator is easier to see and offers more buoyancy, although it may land more heavily and affect a delicate presentation.
Color should contrast with the background so the indicator remains easy to track. Bright colors can stand out in many conditions, while darker colors may be easier to distinguish against bright glare or pale water. How to Position the Indicator

Setting Up for River Conditions
Current speed and water structure should influence both placement and presentation. In faster water, a stable, visible indicator and enough leader below it can help the fly reach the desired depth. In shallow or clear water, a shorter setup and a less obtrusive indicator may reduce the chance of alarming wary fish.
When fishing a river, position the indicator so the fly can drift naturally through the target lane. Casting slightly upstream gives the rig time to settle before it reaches the area you want to fish. As the rig moves downstream, mend the line when necessary to reduce drag. The goal is for the fly and indicator to travel at a natural pace rather than being pulled by the floating line.
Using Indicators While Nymphing
Indicators are especially useful when nymphs are being fished near the bottom, in slow sections, deep pools, or water where subtle takes are hard to detect through the line. They can also help in stained water or low light, provided the indicator remains visible.
Observe the water before choosing your depth. Surface activity, insect movement, and the locations where fish are holding can help determine how deep the nymph should fish. If the indicator repeatedly stops in the same place, the fly may be contacting the bottom. Adjust the depth or weight rather than assuming every interruption is a strike.
Reading the Indicator and Setting the Hook
Do not wait for a dramatic dive. Trout and other fish may move the indicator only slightly. Set the hook whenever its movement appears unnatural, particularly after a pause or sideways shift. Use a controlled lift rather than a violent strike, especially with light tippet or small flies.
