Refinishing a fiberglass fishing rod can improve its appearance and add a protective layer, but the work requires a light touch. Fiberglass is strong, yet aggressive scraping, excessive heat, or deep sanding can damage the rod beneath the old coating. Work slowly, follow the instructions for every product, and stop if you uncover cracks, crushed areas, or exposed structural fibers.

Gather everything before starting so the rod can be handled as little as possible while the new finish is wet. You will need:
- Fiberglass-compatible chemical stripper, if the existing finish cannot be removed by sanding alone
- Fine-grit sandpaper, approximately 220- to 400-grit
- A plastic scraper and soft brush or dust cloth
- Marine-grade epoxy resin and its matching hardener
- A foam brush or clean, non-shedding brush
- Clean mixing and application containers
- Plastic sheeting or another non-porous covering for the work surface
- Protective gloves, eye protection, and suitable clothing
Use a clean, well-ventilated workspace. Keep chemical products away from flames and follow the label instructions for ventilation, protective equipment, disposal, and mixing ratios. Do not assume that every stripper, solvent, or finish is safe for fiberglass; check the product label first.
Prepare the rod and workspace
Remove dirt, grease, and loose debris from the rod. If the rod has fittings or other parts that should not receive finish, remove them where practical or protect them carefully with suitable masking materials. Examine the blank for cracks, deep dents, loose components, or exposed fibers. Refinishing will not repair structural damage, so those problems should be addressed before applying a new coating.
Cover the work surface and arrange the tools within easy reach. Good lighting is important because it helps reveal scratches, missed areas, drips, and uneven coverage. Keep the rod supported so it does not roll onto the floor or touch contaminated surfaces.
Remove the old coating carefully
Start with the least aggressive method. Lightly sand the existing finish with fine-grit paper to dull the surface and remove loose material. Sand along the length of the rod using steady, light pressure. Avoid concentrating on one small area, since creating a flat spot or sanding through the coating can weaken the finish and expose the fiberglass.
If a chemical stripper is necessary, use only one specifically identified as compatible with fiberglass. Apply it according to the manufacturer’s directions, then lift the softened coating with a plastic scraper rather than a metal tool. Clean away residue as directed by the product instructions and allow the rod to dry fully.
Use heat with extreme caution. Excessive heat can affect the rod or its existing adhesive layers, so a heat gun should not be used unless the product or repair guidance specifically supports that method. Never force stubborn material off the blank.
Sand and clean the surface
Once the old finish has been removed, sand the rod again with fine-grit paper to create an even base. Use long strokes along the rod and maintain consistent, gentle pressure. Inspect the surface frequently. The goal is a smooth, uniformly dull surface—not removal of the fiberglass itself.
Wipe the rod thoroughly with a soft, clean cloth or brush to remove sanding dust. Use only a cleaning product that is compatible with the fiberglass and the new epoxy. Let the surface dry completely before mixing the finish. Dust, oil, and moisture can interfere with adhesion and leave visible flaws in the coating.
Apply the new epoxy finish
Read the epoxy instructions before combining the resin and hardener. Measure the components accurately and mix them in a clean container for the recommended time, scraping the sides and bottom without introducing unnecessary bubbles.
Apply a thin, even coat with a foam brush or quality brush. Work in long strokes and avoid repeatedly brushing areas that have already begun to settle. Too much finish can create runs, sags, or an uneven appearance, while an overly thin coat may not provide consistent coverage. Keep the rod supported and inspect it from several angles as you work.
If the product instructions call for more than one coat, observe the specified recoat window rather than guessing. Do not add solvents, extra hardener, or other materials unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.
Allow the finish to cure
Place the coated rod in a stable, dust-free location. Follow the epoxy’s stated curing time; the required time depends on the product and the surrounding conditions. Avoid handling, bending, or installing components until the coating has cured sufficiently.
Stable temperature and moderate humidity generally provide better conditions than a cold, damp, or rapidly changing environment. Keep the rod positioned so the wet finish does not pool or sag, and check it occasionally without touching the surface. Protect the rod from dust and airborne debris while it cures.
Inspect before use
After curing, check the entire rod for missed spots, drips, bubbles, cloudy areas, or rough particles trapped in the finish. Confirm that the coating is firmly set and that the rod still flexes normally without cracking or separating. Correct minor surface flaws only with the same careful preparation and product guidance used for the original coat. If the rod shows structural damage or unusual weakness, do not return it to service merely because it has a fresh finish.
